Independent Trip-Planning and Focus on Comfort

The research reflects the predominant share of independent bookings, high popularity of OTA and other trends of the business trip market of Russia. Biletix conducted the survey at the request of the Association of Corporate Travel Executives ABT-ACTE Russia. The research of the preferences of business travellers was conducted in early August, as part of the Biletix.Business project, targeted at people working in small and medium-sized businesses. The results were presented at the session of ABT-ACTE Russia Saint Petersburg Business Travel Forum on August 23.

In 2016, Biletix, the Internet service for travellers, presented their online solution for legal entities — Biletix.Business. It allows to optimise the process and document handling of purchasing plane and railway tickets for their employees on business travels. The survey covered legal entities — clients who registered in the Biletix.Business B2B service. In total, it included 1721 Russian business travellers who answered questions regarding the organisation of all stages of planning a trip.

The highlight of the research are the responses on the topic of travel planning: 62.8% of respondents said that they organise their trips on their own, for 12.3% the company manages all the aspects, while the remaining 24.2% participate in trip planning from time to time.

Those who plan their trip independently told about the services they use. Plane ticket OTA demonstrated predictably high results — 93.7% of respondents use them. The second place went to hotel booking OTA (61.5%) and the third place — to online taxi services (23.7%). To the question "Which variant of mobile and Internet services for travellers do you consider the most useful for yourself?", the majority (46.6%) chose "Comparison of offers and prices by date and provider"; it was followed by the option of online payment (31.2%) and subscription or price monitoring for selected destinations (12%).

The majority of respondents (77.3%) named the increased comfort of business travels as the biggest trend of the last few years; only 4.4% of the surveyed disagreed with this opinion. This trend is clearly illustrated by the responses to the question "How did you use to get to the airport several years ago? How do you prefer to get to the airport now?" Today, most business tourists choose taxi — its share grew from 39% to 45.9%. The popularity of Aeroexpress (from 21.2% to 24.9%), private and corporate cars (from 17.2% to 21.3%) also increased. On the other hand, public transport became less popular, from 21.7% to 7.2%. Besides, the majority of business travellers (71.2%) mentioned that the quality of air transport service has increased significantly in the recent years.

The most important factor in choosing a hotel for a business trip is its location — 62.2% of tourists mentioned it. Comfort and quality of service (51.4%) and price (35.4%) occupy the second place. Almost a half of business tourists prefer to seize their trip as an opportunity to learn about the destination, its cultural agenda, or as vacation.
